Mary Beth Latham and her family are living the perfect American family life in New England. She has a successful landscaping business and her husband Glen is an opthamologist. They have three teenage children and lots of friends in their neighbourhood. Family life is good, although not without its problems. Son Alex is handsome, athletic and popular whereas Mary Beth’s other son Max is reserved and shy. Her daughter, Ruby, is beautiful and intelligent, although she suffers from an eating disorder and has split up with her longstanding boyfriend who cannot come to terms with the split. Then one New Year’s Eve a shocking and unthinkable tragedy happens at the family home. For Mary Beth life will never be the same again, however somehow she must find a way to get on with the rest of her life.
