Having seen the film, Gill found this book a good read as it added lots of additional detail to the story. She found that this made the book more interesting than she had expected.

Pi, a sixteen year old Tamil boy from Pondicherry and the son of a zookeeper, is emigrating to Canada on a cargo ship. On board are his family and the animals from the zoo. After the ship tragically sinks, Pi finds himself floating the wild, blue Pacific Ocean in the only lifeboat. In the boat with him are; a hyena, a zebra, an orang-utan and a 450 pound Royal Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.

Thus the scene is set for an engrossing, fantasy adventure and a tale of wild and crazy ideas.
